With the Halloween weekend coming up, many people will be on the look out for the perfect horror movie to watch. The genre has become increasingly popular in recent years with the morbid curioisity of viewers making them hooked on darker subjects.

Film review website Rotten Tomatoes has ranked Sinners, which was released in April, as the number one horror movie to watch this Halloween. The film, directed by Ryan Coogler, has an impressive 97% rating from 413 reviews. Although it’s not available to watch on Netflix, Sinners is on Amazon Prime, Apple TV and the Sky Store. In a review of the film, Linda Cook, writer at WHBF-TV, simply said: “A genre-defying masterpiece.”

The film stars Michael B. Jordan and is set in the Mississippi Delta in 1932. It features criminal twin brothers, who are also WW1 veterans, as they return to their hometown to start a new life.

However, they confront supernatural evil in the form of vampires who symbolise colonisation and cultural appropriation in America. Sinners has been praised for its music, featuring a range of blues classics, new tracks and traditional songs.

Since being released earlier this year, the film has won a number awards. Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor at the Astra Midseason Movie Awards for his role while Ryan Coogler won Best Director.

Coogler has also won the Director Award at the Celebration of Cinema and Television. Meanwhile, Sinners was named Best Horror Movie at the Critics’ Choice Super Awards in August.

Sinners has a host of positive reviews from film critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Gavin Spoors, of Filmhounds Magazine, said: “This is a rare blockbuster feature where every element of production is practically perfect.”

Rebecca Sayce, from the same publication, added: “Packed full of rich cinematography, an intricate backstory, affable characters, and enough tension to have audiences on the edge of their cinema seats, Sinners is one of the best horror films of the year, but one of the best films full stop.”

Dana Han-Klein, from We’re Watching What?!, wrote: “Scintillating and superb. Coogler’s brilliant storytelling and dedication to authenticity, combined with stellar performances, impressive imagery, and an exceptional score make Sinners an outstanding time at the movies.”
