A “masterpiece” book has been turned into a hit movie starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried. Based on the novel of the same name, The Housemaid is a gripping thriller that has people rushing to the cinemas.

Both the book, written by Freida McFadden, and the 2025 film adaptation follow Millie Calloway, a young woman with a difficult past, who lands a job in the Winchester household as a housemaid. However, she quickly discovers that not everything is as perfect as it seems as she unmasks the family’s dark secrets, including Nina’s volatile behavior and Andrew’s manipulative tendencies. A huge, dramatic twist reveals the truth as all of the characters find themselves in a deadly situation. The movie has been a major box office hit since its late December 2025 release, with strong opening weekends and continued success. It has been in high demand, with sold-out screenings in many locations across the world.

And it’s no surprise after the book rocketed in sales. It has sold millions of copies globally, surpassing 2 million copies by 2024 and reaching 3.5million copies sold by the end of 2025.

Fans have been quick to praise the film adaptation. Posting to IMDB, one viewer said: “As a huge fan of the book, the movie didn’t disappoint me at all! The character portrayals were spot on. Especially Seyfried’s performance as Nina, hand her that Oscar already!!!

“I still prefer the book. But the movie actually lived up to my expectations & maybe even more! I think I actually prefer the ending of the movie over the ending of the book.”

Another added: “I listened to the audiobook summer of 2023 and was introduced to Freida McFadden. This movie follows the book extremely well and even though I couldn’t remember every detail from the book, I recalled the main events. It’s a decent movie and I appreciate its similarity to the book (probably because McFadden was an executive producer on this). Worth the watch!”

“Worth the watch here. So the book is pretty good and I enjoyed that a lot so was nervous as usually these things do not go well when adapted, at least sometimes. Here though it is fairly well done and a good watch, tense and conveys the absolute nutjob characters very well.

“Helped along with solid performances from the two main leads, Amanda and Sydney with quite the twist that I think is pulled off quite successfully,” a third penned.
