Getting ready to go on holiday is exciting – but one task some people don’t look forward to is packing their suitcases. It can be stressful deciding what to pack and making sure you don’t pack too much that you exceed your luggage allowance, but at the same time you want to make sure you’ve packed everything you’ll need while you’re away.

Before you travel, it’s important that you have enough clothes and other essentials to last for the duration of your trip. And thankfully, an expert has provided her top tips to make this happen.

Chantel Mila posts content on social media related to cleaning, organising and styling as she is an organisational expert, interior stylist and author of The Dream Clean.

She often shares hacks on these topics and has millions of followers across her online platforms. The organisation guru recently posted a video on TikTok with her top tips on how to pack your suitcase.

1. Pack clothes vertically

Mila firstly recommends fitting more clothes in your suitcase by packing vertically. In the TikTok clip, she folded up a range of different clothing items and packed them vertically into her large suitcase by standing it up.

2. Place essential oil on cotton balls

You might worry about your clothes not smelling the best after being crammed into a suitcase for a long flight or journey. To solve this problem and keep clothes smelling dresh, Mila suggests putting a few drops of essential oil onto cotton balls then putting them in a small bag that you can place in the middle of your suitcase in between your packed, folded clothes.

3. Pack belts around suitcase

The expert’s next tip is to pack belts around the clothes in your suitcase to save space. The inside edge of a suitcase is an ideal place to pack belts due to their long shape.

4. Use suitcase lining to separate slippers

A lot of people don’t want to put their shoes and clothes together in their suitcase – so Mila recommends using the lining to put slippers or flip flops in the top pocket. This will allow them to be separated away from clothes.

5. Squeeze air out of toiletries to prevent them leaking

No one wants to pack toiletries in their suitcase only to find that they have leaked inside or got onto clothes. Mila squeezes air out of toiletries to prevent them leaking by gently pressing down on the packaging with her fingers then closing the lid.

6. Use silicone lids to prevent spills

To further avoid toiletries from making a mess in your suitcase, the content creator added that you can use silicone lids from Amazon to prevent spills.

7. Prevent necklaces tangling by placing them through a straw

You might want to pack accessories, like jewellery, in your suitcase to complete your outfits on holiday but it is frustrating when a necklace gets tangled. The organisation guru avoids this by placing necklaces through straws.

8. Use a button to keep earrings together

Earrings can be even harder to pack due to their generally small size – and they have to be kept together. Mila recommends putting earrings through the holes of a button to keep them together to prevent one of the earrings in a pair from getting lost.

9. Stuff shoes with socks or chargers to save space

Another tip Mila gave to save space is stuff shoes with socks or chargers. This will also help to keep socks together and make it easier to find socks or chargers as you will just have to look inside your shoes.

10. Place an AirTag in your suitcase so you can track it if it goes missing

Mila’s final recommendation is to place an AirTag in your suitcase so you can track it in case it goes missing. AirTag is a tracking device developed by Apple that allows you to keep tabs on where your personal items are by checking the Find My app on your iPhone or iPad.

The organisational expert’s TikTok video has been well-received by users on the platform who praised her tips. One said: “The essential oils never occurred to me, will def (definitely) be incorporating!”

Another added: “The air tag idea is genius!!!” And a third commented: “Nifty! I’m going to try this.”
