Lady Gaga Free Concert Set for Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro
Scheduled for May 3, the event will launch the Todo Mundo no Rio initiative, which aims to highlight economic benefits of entertainment in Rio de Janeiro
Lady Gaga is going to Brazil. On May 3, the musician will headline a performance at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro as part of the Todo Mundo no Rio initiative, which aims to highlight economic benefits of entertainment in the city. The event will be free and open to the public on a first come, first served basis.
“It’s a great honor to be asked to sing for Rio—for my whole career, the fans in Brazil have been part of the lifeblood of the little monsters,” Gaga wrote on Instagram. “I’ve been dying to come perform for you for years and was heartbroken when I had to cancel years ago because I was hospitalized.” In 2017, the singer canceled her appearance at Rock in Rio after suffering “severe physical pain that has impacted her ability to perform.”
Gaga continued: “Your understanding that I needed that time to heal meant the world to me. I am now coming back and I feel better than ever and am working so hard to make sure this show is one you will never forget. Get ready for MAYHEM on the beach.”
Gaga’s last large-scale headlining performances took place in stadiums on the Chromatica tour. She last performed in Brazil on the Born This Way Ball tour in 2012. For this event, she will have a stage custom-built to accommodate her set. The performance is scheduled for just under two months after the release of her forthcoming album Mayhem, out March 7. Prior to taking the stage there, she will headline Coachella, marking another milestone return.
“I’ve had a vision I’ve never been able to fully realize at Coachella for reasons beyond our control, but I wanted to come through for music fans,” said Gaga, who last played the festival in 2017. “Have been wanting to go back and to do it right, and I am. I’m headlining and starting the weekend off at Coachella. Can’t wait to hear you all singalong and dance dance DANCE till we drop.”
