Kelly Clarkson ‘All I Wanna Do’ Cover Gets Sheryl Crow Approval Stamp
After seeing Clarkson’s rendition of the song for Kellyoke, the singer-songwriter praised: “@kellyclarkson could sing the damn phone book!”
The Kelly Clarkson cover effect has struck again. During a recent Kellyoke segment on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the singer performed an impassioned rendition of Sheryl Crow‘s 1994 hit single “All I Wanna Do.” The record has been covered on releases from artists like Amy Studt and Joanne Farrell, but Crow has crowned Clarkson’s version as the best yet — ranking even higher than her own.
“Good grief,” Crow commented on Instagram. “@kellyclarkson could sing the damn phone book! I love this version better than mine!!” Clarkson previously covered Crow on the talk show in February 2023 when she performed “Dance Around It” by Lucius, which features Crow and Brandi Carlile. In October 2020, during the show’s second season, she covered “The First Cut Is the Deepest” after previously performing “If It Makes You Happy” during season one.
Crow has appeared as a guest on The Kelly Clarkson Show twice. Her most recent appearance was just over a year ago, while she was promoting her latest studio album, Evolution. “You have this very beautiful gift of going deep with the lyrics and the messaging, but making it light and fun to sing. The whole audience was just singing ‘Soak Up the Sun,’” Clarkson told her. “Even that song, to just rest, be still, soak in the moment, be present — it’s a lot. But everybody sings along, and it sounds like such a fun song. You have a very special gift with that.”
Throughout this season, Clarkson has covered Raye’s “Worth It,” Foo Fighters’ “Learn to Fly,” Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl,” and her own singles “Since U Been Gone,” “Heartbeat Song,” “Dark Side,” and more for Kellyoke.
“I get a list of songs that have been requested, and I have to make sure we haven’t already covered a song, or if we did, is there a way we can present it differently?” music director Jason Halbert told Vulture in 2019. “And she’s definitely part of choosing the final selections, because there’s certain songs that lend to her voice better than others.”
