As the temperature outside warms up and we get to experience more sunny days leading up to summer, many will start keeping their windows and doors open to let the fresh air get inside our homes. However, this can also lead to more insects and spiders entering your home like it’s their own.
While we don’t have any dangerous spiders in the UK, as even if the spider is venomous, their fangs aren’t big or strong enough to get through human skin. But for the general house spider, they general do no harm as they just hide in dark corners, and feed on household insects.
Despite keeping your home clear of other insects, it can still be jarring to find a spider having made itself comfortable in your home as a new, uninvited house guest. But luckily, there are some easy ways you can prevent them from entering your home in the first place.
To help, a cleaning fanatic named Anna Lousia has shared her top tips on how to keep spiders out of your home, without the need of any harsh chemicals.
“Three tips to spider proof the house,” the text read at the start of her TikTok video, before she went in to share her tips.

Peppermint around doors and windows
Firstly, she is seen filling and empty spray bottle with water before adding in a few drops of peppermint oil
“Spray around your windows and doors with peppermint oil and water,” she explained.
Peppermint oil is an effective, natural, and non-toxic spider repellent because the strong scent overwhelms their sensory receptors, causing them to avoid treated areas. It works best when sprayed around entry points like windowsills and doors, or by using cotton balls soaked in oil. Reapply every week or fortnight for best results.
Cinnamon sticks around home
Next up, Anna Louisa recommends dotting whole cinnamon sticks around your home, whether it’s hiding them behind items, or making it part of your decor. You should focus on cupboards, windowsills, and entry points.

Just like with the peppermint, spiders can’t stand the scent of cinnamon, and will keep them from entering your home if placed strategically around your home.
If you don’t like the idea of having cinnamon sticks around your home, you can also use ground cinnamon or cinnamon essential old to turn into a spray.
Orange essential oil mopping
For her third and final advice, Anna Louisa recommends adding orange essential oil to your floor cleaner, such as the water you mop with, or onto a speed mop sheet.
Similarly to the other two hacks, orange essential oil acts as a natural spider repellent due to its strong scent and the compound limonene, which irritates spiders’ leg sensors.
You can also mix this oil with the cinnamon or peppermint oil and spray it around doors, windows, and dark corners of your home, where the spiders would feel most at home.
While these tips won’t work if you’re in the middle of a spider infestation, they do work great for keeping spiders away from entering your home in the first place.
