More hot weather is on its way and while it might be lovely during the day, trying to get to sleep in a heatwave is less pleasant. With temperatures forecast to creep above 30C, the UK is facing down some sleepless nights.

If you’re one of the people who finds themselves tossing and turning trying to get a proper night’s sleep, there are a couple of things you can try. Although a fan is helpful, if you don’t have one or don’t want to fork out the cash to buy one – not to mention the cost of keeping it running – these tips are perfect for you.

They’ll keep you cooler at night, at zero extra cost – perfect for people on a budget.

The first thing that I do every time the mercury creeps up is keep a bottle of water frozen.

When it comes time to go to sleep, I take the bottle out of the freezer and place it on my pulse points. These are parts of the body where major arteries are close to the skin’s surface, such as the wrists, inner thighs, and neck.

When you apply ice to them, it cools the blood which is being pumped around your body and can rapidly cool you down. You can wrap the bottle in a pillowcase to stop it dripping water on you.

You can also use a hot water bottle instead of a drinking bottle, but if you choose to do this it;s very important you don’t use the same hot water bottle in the winter, If you have frozen it, and then try to fill it with hot water, it increases the risk of leaks and burns.

The other great way to beat the heat that doesn’t cost a thing is to keep a spray bottle of water in the fridge.

If you’re struggling to cope, then lightly misting yourself with ice cold water can lower your body temperature and make it easier to get to sleep. Just make sure your bottle has a mist setting, and you don’t overdo it – no one likes soggy bed sheets.
