Robert Eggers has terrified audiences with his period horror flicks from The Witch and The Lighthouse to Nosferatu. Now the acclaimed arthouse director returns with Werwulf, set in 13th century England with a script entirely spoken in Middle English.

James Bond bookies’ favourite Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the cursed farmer opposite Lily-Rose Deep as his wife, while regular Eggers collaborators Willem Dafoe and Ralph Ineson return in new character roles. Co-penned with Sjón, who co-wrote The Northman with Eggers, the new film follows a werewolf haunting local villagers.

Universal Pictures teases: “Witness Robert Eggers’ most visceral and haunting experience yet. Focus Features presents WERWULF, a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation and the devil within.”

Werwulf hits UK cinemas on New Year’s Day.
