Netflix’s original thriller film A House of Dynamite is set to drop and it’s amongst the streaming giant’s most eagerly awaited new releases for 2025.

Helmed by Zero Dark Thirty and Detroit director Kathryn Bigelow, the picture chronicles multiple groups of individuals responding to a catastrophic assault on American territory.

Hollywood luminaries Rebecca Ferguson and Idris Elba spearhead the stellar ensemble as various behind-the-scenes officials, specialists and politicians labouring relentlessly to avert the prospect of nuclear warfare.

But does the pulse-pounding thriller draw from incidents that have genuinely occurred?

Let’s examine more closely what sparked Bigelow’s essential new picture arriving on Netflix this Friday (24th October), reports the Mirror.

Is A House of Dynamite based on a true story?

No, A House of Dynamite is not rooted in real occurrences and remains a fictional work.

None of the principal characters portrayed in the picture are genuine, including Elba as an imaginary President of the United States.

Nevertheless, Bigelow and screenwriter Noah Oppenheim did take inspiration from the present worldwide situation alongside comprehensive investigation into US defence to craft a credible scenario of a lethal assault against the global superpower.

Speaking to the Guardian, the director revealed: “Someone I know said the bomb for the audience is realising this is possible.

“I’m glad if people come away from the movie as concerned as I am.”

The 73-year-old director reveals she was raised during an era when nuclear warfare seemed an ever-present danger, with “duck and cover” exercises being routine practice.

Now witnessing the chaotic 2020s unfold, Bigelow hopes viewers will rediscover that frightening reality.

“Our world is combustible,” she cautions. “And it’s extraordinary to me how that ever became normalised.”

The authenticity of the production is demonstrated through Ferguson’s Captain Olivia Walker, a military communications specialist operating within the White House’s Situation Room.

“The roles that I had done thus far, they’ve all been characters. And what I haven’t done is to just be a normal human being,” she explained regarding the part in a Tudum interview.

Ferguson’s thorough preparation for the character featured enlightening discussions with Larry Pfeiffer, the former senior director of the actual Situation Room and inspiration behind Jason Clarke’s Admiral Mark Miller.

“I felt from the beginning that there was enormous trust in her handing over this role to me,” Ferguson continued.

“There was also the fact that I made it very clear to her that I wanted it to be correct. I wanted to do research.”

Therefore, whilst the film’s events mercifully remain fictional, A House of Dynamite serves as a stark warning that such scenarios could materialise without notice.

A House of Dynamite will be released Friday, 24th October on Netflix.
