‘Instant classic’ WW2 film starring Emmerdale icon branded ‘masterpiece’ | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV
World War 2 buffs won’t want to miss a “masterpiece” period film from back in 2020, starring Emmerdale royalty. History fans are only just discovering the film, set around the Battle of Normandy in 1944, which follows a high-ranking official captured and held in a German prisoner of war camp as a team of specialists take on the dangerous mission to break him out. But little do they know he doesn’t want to be rescued.
Titled We Go in at Dawn, the film stars Emmerdale and Strictly legend Kelvin Fletcher as John Seabourne, while Christos Lawton, Audrey L’Ebrellec and Tim Berrington star alongside him.
Positive reviews have abounded despite the movie’s low-budget, with one writing on IMDb: “This movie is a low budget production, it’s not like flying WWII fighters costs nothing… So of course they have to do what they can with the budget they have, and I personally think it was well done.”
Someone else agreed: “Considering the budget limitations and accepting the plot I found acting rather fine. Overall I had a good time watching it. Not a blockbuster but could fare rather well on TV.”
Others compared it to Top Secret and Where Eagles Dare, with one writing: “Kelvin Fletcher really suited the part and played it well. I hope to see him in more movies!”
However, others called it “the worst film ever made”, with one review moaning: “One of the worst films I have ever seen. Don’t bother – boring, boring, boring. The acting is awful, then you have the hero banging around and talking in a very loud voice when there are German guards around. Maybe all the guards have terrible hearing?”
Someone else said: “One of the most significant issues is the historical accuracy. The film struggles to create a believable World War II setting, with inaccuracies in costumes, weapons, and even basic military tactics. This can be distracting for viewers who are well-versed in the history of the era.”
