‘Inspiring’ BAFTA-winning movie is now streaming on Netflix | Films | Entertainment
Released in 2025, it is based on John Davidson, a Scottish man with severe Tourette’s syndrome who was the subject of the 1989 television documentary John’s Not Mad.
I Swear stars Robert Aramayo as Davidson, alongside Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson, and Peter Mullan in supporting roles. Scott Ellis Watson makes his acting debut as a young Davidson. It was acclaimed by critics, who praised the performances of Aramayo and Mullan upon its release, and it also received five nominations at the 79th British Academy Film Awards, winning two, including Best Actor in a Leading Role for Aramayo.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Scottish setting, true-life story of John Davidson. Diagnosed with Tourette’s at 15, targeted as ‘insane’ by his peers, he struggled with a condition few had witnessed. Campaigning for better understanding and acceptance of the condition of Tourette’s as an adult, he finds his life’s purpose and accepted his MBE from the Queen in 2019.”
I Swear has amassed an impressive score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics’ consensus states: “A deft balance of prickly and sweet that’s bound together by Robert Aramayo’s knockout performance, I Swear doesn’t sugarcoat the challenges of Tourette syndrome while delivering an uplifting tale of resilience.
“I Swear is a poignant, deeply affecting drama that never slips into cheap sentimentality and leaves you wiser than when you walked in,” one critic wrote.
Another said: “I Swear is an absolute gem of a film. It is a plea for kindness and patience in a world that diminishes and undermines those qualities every day.”
A third added: “While it is an important film, it is also heartwarming and hilarious, making it both enlightening and entertaining.”
A fan of the movie said: “I Swear is one of those rare films that leaves you feeling transformed by its conclusion. It wonderfully explores Tourette’s syndrhumourith all the holistic humor, hard-to-watch heartbreak, and heartwarming hilarity that comes with the inspiring life story of John Davidson.”
I Swear is available to stream now on Netflix.
