Incredible gangster film for The Godfather fans – 91% score and Al Pacino’s ‘best movie’ | Films | Entertainment
An incredible gangster film hailed as Al Pacino’s “best movie” is a must-watch for fans of The Godfather. Based on more than 100,000 rave audience reviews, the classic 90s film has earned an impressive 91% ranking on the film rating site, Rotten Tomatoes.
Set in New York City, Al Pacino stars as a Puerto Rican ex–drug lord freshly released from prison after a five‑year sentence, who is determined to build a new life away from crime. Though his character, Carlito Brigante, is focused on change, corrupt and criminal forces from his past continuously test his commitment to a straight path. Carlito’s Way became such a hit that one reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes simply branded it: “The best Al Pacino movie.”
The film became a home-rental hit after a lukewarm reception at the box office, which cemented its status as a 90s crime‑drama classic, often cited as one of De Palma’s best 90s films and a standout in Pacino’s later career.
Another reviewer added: “One of the best Al Pacino movies. His performance is like a magic. Sean Penn and other supporting actors all are great in this film.
“I like both Scarface and Carlito’s Way and I love both Al Pacino and Brain De Palma, they are legendary actor and filmmaker.”
The 1993 crime drama directed by Brian De Palma is praised for its balance of tense action sequences with quieter and introspective character‑focused moments.
A third reviewer commented: “This and Donnie Brasco are my favorite Al Pacino films. You won’t be disappointed watching this.”
While both films follow men caught between a life of crime, they do so in different ways.
Carlito’s Way takes viewers through a personal struggle of one man who is trying to escape his past, compared to the multi-generation saga of the epic, The Godfather.
