Yet another fantasy blockbuster is set to hit screens later this year, and anticipation is already building amongst fans.

Following hot on the heels of Dune: Part Three and Christopher Nolan’s hugely anticipated The Odyssey, the trailer for Ramayana has dropped and has already amassed over 20 million views in 12 days on YouTube, reports the Mirror.

The film’s trailer promises an epic clash between the forces of good and evil.

Scores of viewers rushed to the comments section to share their reactions, with one person simply posting: “The emotions” and three fire emojis.

A second said: “Was ready for a 30-40 sec glimpse, no way they released a 2:38 seconds of teaser , this one feels legit what india can truly present in global level. Mind is blown [sic].”

A third viewer wrote: “Who cannot stop themselves from watching the teaser again and again, just because of the quality?”

Another added: “Guys, believe me-I watched this teaser in the theatre and got absolute goosebumps. The VFX looks incredible on the big screen. It’s truly made for theatres, not mobile screens. Once you experience it in a cinema, you’ll definitely love it.”

Ramayana draws its inspiration from the ancient Hindu epic poem the Ramayana, also known as the Valmiki Ramayana, one of the greatest ancient epics in world literature, comprising nearly 24,000 verses.

The poem chronicles Hindu mythology, featuring gods and mythical beings, in a manner reminiscent of Ancient Greek literature.

A description for Ramayana reads: “Rama is the greatest of all time because he lived a life where the choices he made were always in the benefit of the greater good, duty over desire, and sacrifice over self.

“His legacy continues to enhance and empower humanity over time and bring the belief in the goodness of the human spirit to resolve all conflict and bring peace to the world.”

The film centres on the trials of Rama (played by Ranbir Kapoor), whose tranquil life alongside his wife Sita (Sai Pallavi) and devoted brother Lakshman (Ravie Dubey), amongst others, is torn apart when a cruel twist of fate sends him into exile.

He will subsequently find himself locked in a monumental battle with the demon Ravana (Yash) in a confrontation so earth-shattering that it will determine the fate of both gods and mortals alike.

Ramayana has been directed by acclaimed Indian filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari and boasts a score from Oscar winners Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman.

Meanwhile, eight-time Oscar-winning production and VFX studio DNEG, which is also behind aforementioned Hollywood blockbusters Dune: Part Three and The Odyssey, has also lent its expertise to Ramayana.

Given the sweeping scope and grand scale of the narrative, Ramayana has been divided into two parts, with the first set for release this autumn to coincide with Diwali in November.

Diwali, the festival of light, marks the homecoming of Rama to his kingdom following 14 years of exile and his defeat of the demon Ravana.

Ramayana Part 1 will released in cinemas later this year
