‘I’m a mum – this family car solved all my luggage problems’
When you’re a parent, you have one big problem: stuff. Yes, children come with an awful lot of paraphernalia, from prams to white noise machines, nappies to travel potties. More equipment is needed for a day trip than was sent into orbit for NASA’s Artemis II mission.
So when I’m trying out a family car – space is my first consideration. And when I tell you that the boot on the Škoda Superb Estate Sportline 2.0 is so large that I couldn’t fill it, it is no exaggeration. Even en route to a weekend away with two enormous suitcases, a travel pram, four coats, four pairs of wellies and a baby carrier, there was room to spare. It also meant I could pack it quickly – and badly – without having to play luggage jenga. A huge win.
Staying on theme, the interior is generous too, with plenty of room for duvets, toys and snacks. And that’s just for the grown ups… Yes, when it comes to space, the Škoda really is Superb. The legroom is something Ryanair could only dream of. Even in the back, a tall adult can stretch out.
With space, however, comes bulk, and the car is admittedly quite long. Forget squeezing into a small space on the village roadside – the Superb is long and strong. 4.86m from nose to tip to be exact. Even when parked in a bay, the aforementioned nose sticks out.
As cars go, the Superb is also quite low to the ground. And this might not be to everyone’s taste. My partner John, used to driving a tank, wasn’t keen. But I loved it. It creates a sort of cocoon as you sit, which is incredibly comfortable, especially for long journeys. The ergonomically designed seats hug your back like a moving desk chair, holding the spine carefully in place.
When it comes to tech, the Superb has everything you need to remain entertained, and on the right A road. At the front, a 13-inch screen features an easy-to-use sat nav, music controls including every radio station under the sun, and the ability to connect your phone. From a child safety point of view, the Superb features ISOFIX anchor points on the rear seats as standard, complete with Top Tether anchor points.
We drove the Superb from our home in Manchester to Oban in Scotland. A six hour drive, it was a true test of endurance for both a family car and the family in it. And, reader, I’m pleased to report that even after 45 episodes of Bluey, and 25 rounds of I Spy, by the time we reached our home for the weekend, everyone was still both comfortable and cheerful. A family road trip miracle indeed.
