When it comes to books, we all have our favourite genres. You could be making your way through all of the greatest murder mysteries on the shelf, or perhaps you enjoy escaping to never-heard-of fantasyscapes? For me, it’s all about romance, and there is one book that will always be on the highest of pedestals and hard to beat.

One Day by David Nicholls has been my favourite book for as long as I can remember. Released in 2009, it tells the story of two Emma and Dexter, two young students who come from opposing backgrounds and end up spending their graduation night together, knowing they will go their separate ways the next day, July 15 1988. We are then taken on a decade-long journey that revisits the same date (St. Swithens Day) every year, giving an insight to each of their lives and how their relationship has evolved over time.

It’s a classic ‘will they? won’t they?’ story, told in the most beautiful and realistic style. The book is set in both London and Edinburgh, with forays into further lands at points. It’s takes place, of course, throughout late 20th century Britain, which means cultural touchstones like the Thatcher era and the rise of Britpop, provide depth to the characters and their struggles.

It’s been remade into a film, which of course became one of my favourites upon release. It stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Strugess and I couldn’t think of better actors to play the roles of Emma and Dexter if I tried. The theme of whether men and women can ever really be friends, along with the book’s charm, come through into the feature with ease.

Thirteen years on from the film, One Day was also remade into a series for Netflix. I was incredibly excited by this as who wouldn’t want to devour a new illongated version of their favourite story? I thought Leo Woodhall and Ambika Mod were both fantastic in the roles of the protagonists and it gave a fresh take on the classic tale. However, it can be hard to let go of the original characters so, for me, the film will always prevail, and it is who I think about when I think of these characters most.
