I thought I knew Love Actually inside out. I’ve watched it every December without fail, quoting half the lines and crying at the rest. But this year, something became apparent to me, and honestly, I don’t think I’ll ever watch it the same way again.

The revelation occurred as I headed to the Joia rooftop bar at Battersea Power Station’s Artotel for their festive film night, which is happening every Monday to Sunday until December 21. If you’ve never been, imagine the cosiest Christmas Pinterest board brought to life with flickering candles, soft blankets, pine trees dotted between tables, and an incredible skyline view stretching right over the Thames. So there I was, mulled drink in hand, settling in for my comfort film of all comfort films. And then the moment arrived that always makes my blood run cold.

Emma Thompson’s Karen excitedly opens what she thinks is the necklace she found in Harry’s (played by Alan Rickman) coat pocket, but instead of the necklace, it’s a Joni Mitchell CD. Her face instantly collapses, and she somehow holds it together long enough to walk into the bedroom and cry in silence, a scene that only hits harder as I get older.

But here’s the thing I had never noticed until now, and that is how Karen is literally dressed to match the necklace she thinks she’s about to receive. The earrings. The lipstick. The cardigan. All chosen because she expected that necklace. She was ready. She’d already emotionally placed herself in that moment where her husband gives her something meaningful and romantic, and instead, she realises he has been buying jewellery for another woman.

After a TikTok user pointed it out, the comments from outraged viewers poured in: “WAIT. What do you mean she matched her earrings?!! How have I NEVER noticed that???” one person said. Another added: “But how have I never noticed the earrings?”

Watching it again with others quietly sniffling into their popcorn made the scene feel even more brutal as I recognised the collective heartbreak of the women around me. Fortunately, the delicious three-course meal we enjoyed before the film, included in our ticket, likely softened the impact of seeing Emma cry.

It’s one thing to watch this Christmas classic in cosy pyjamas under a duvet while munching on a box of chocolates, but experiencing it on the big screen with real-life London as the backdrop and drinks delivered to your seat is something I highly recommend.
