How MXZI Turned Phonk Into Mainstream Success
London-born producer, artist, and songwriter MXZI has quickly become one of the defining figures behind the modern phonk movement. What began as an independent journey has evolved into a global rise, with the artist now generating over 1.7 billion streams and attracting more than 16 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
Through a combination of viral records & worldwide collaborations, MXZI has played a key role in pushing phonk from a niche internet genre into the mainstream.
When Music Became a Calling
Music was already part of MXZI’s everyday life long before the numbers.
As a teenager, he spent his time freestyling, singing, and beatboxing not with the intention of building a career, but simply because it came naturally. That early connection to music would later evolve into a deeper curiosity about how records were made.
Teaching himself production through software like FL Studio, MXZI began studying the technical side of music drum patterns, arrangement, and the structure behind impactful songs.
By the age of 18, he made a defining decision: to leave school and fully commit to music.
It was a risk without guarantees but one driven by belief.
Building From The Ground Up
Without industry backing, MXZI focused on developing his sound independently. At the time, phonk was still a new, niche sound & far from the traditional music under the EDM umbrella.
With guidance from his Uncle & Mentor DKAYY he fully leaned into the sound quickly gaining momentum.
MXZI began creating music designed specifically for the way audiences were already consuming content fast, engaging, and built for repeat listening. During this period, he helped shape what fans now recognise as the Ladrão Style a faster, more energetic evolution of phonk built around tight arrangements, heavy drops, and constant forward momentum.
Behind the scenes, his uncle and mentor DKAYY played a key role in that development. By introducing him to the culture and connecting him with other producers, including ATLXS, DKAYY helped position MXZI within a network that would later influence the genre’s direction.
Those early relationships eventually evolved into collaborations that helped define the sound of phonk’s modern era.

A Sound Built for short form creators
A major factor behind MXZI’s rise is his understanding of how music travels today.
His records are structured for short-form content, allowing them to spread rapidly across platforms like TikTok. This approach has transformed his releases into highly shareable content, driving both visibility and streaming growth.
The instantly recognisable tracks from his “Montagem” series including “Montagem Xonada,” “Montagem Tomada,” and “Montagem Bailão” have collectively generated hundreds of millions of streams, becoming staples across social media & Youtube.
At the same time, MXZI has begun expanding beyond his role as a producer. On collaborations like “FAVELA”, he steps forward as a rapper, while records such as “Mistakes” showcase a more melodic, vocal-driven side of his artistry.
This versatility positions him as a multi-dimensional artist capable of evolving with the genre.

MXZI’S Chart Recognition
Mxzi’s organic traction across social media has translated into measurable industry success.
MXZI now attracts over 16 million monthly listeners on Spotify, with his catalog surpassing 1.7 billion total streams. His music continues to generate millions of daily plays, placing him among the most streamed producers in the phonk space.
That momentum has also carried into the charts. MXZI has achieved four Billboard placements, including a Top 5 position on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart with “Montagem Tomada” a milestone that reflects the growing crossover between internet-driven genres and the traditional music industry.
Across TikTok and short-form platforms, his music has been used in millions of user-generated videos, collectively generating billions of views further reinforcing the global reach of his sound.
Looking Ahead
Despite the scale of his success, MXZI’s trajectory still feels like it is only the beginning.
As he continues to release new music and collaborate across both electronic and hip-hop spaces, his focus remains on evolving the sound he helped build. With growing influence as both a producer and artist, he is no longer just contributing to the rise of phonk he is helping define its direction.
In a music landscape increasingly shaped by digital culture, MXZI represents a new kind of artist: one who understands not only how to create sound, but how that sound moves.
And as phonk continues its global expansion, the foundations he has helped build are becoming impossible to ignore.
