Horror movie with 90% on Rotten Tomatoes that left fans ‘broken’ | Films | Entertainment

With an impressive 90% rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics, this 2018 thriller has done its job and left viewers “broken”. Hereditary is an American supernatural psychological film written and directed by Ari Aster in her feature film debut.

The film’s synopsis reads: “When the matriarch of the Graham family passes away, her daughter and grandchildren begin to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry, trying to outrun the sinister fate they have inherited.”

The film stars Alex Wolff, Toni Collette, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd, and Gabriel Byrne among others.

It has received a 90% approval rating via the Tomatometer, which is awarded via the critics. Their consensus reads: “Hereditary uses its classic setup as the framework for a harrowing, uncommonly unsettling horror film whose cold touch lingers long beyond the closing credits.”

John Serba of Decider stated: “Hereditary is insane without being absurd or campy, or calculated in its provocation. Is it a masterpiece? I think it is.”

Another critic praised Collette’s perfomance, she said: “Toni Collette delivers a soul-shattering performance in Hereditary that reminds us how much sacrifice parenthood is and how deeply parents can scar their children, utterly beyond repair.”

One reviewer said: “A complete assault on your mind, body, and soul that will leave you feeling battered and broken.”

“A masterpiece, truly phenomenal. Each scene is dazzling and captivating. The writing is profound, everything a horror movie should be. The first and hopefully not the last horror movie I’ve watched (since I was a child) that genuinely terrified me and earned by undivided attention and respect 10/10” added another audience reviewer.

A Google described the movie as “by far one of my favorite horror films I’ve seen”, with another adding: “A film so horrifying that you simultaneously never want to see it again but can’t take your eyes off while watching it, Ari Aster’s impressive debut Hereditary pays tribute to genre classics such as The Exorcist and The Shining whilst focusing on a complex family drama interwoven with themes of intergenerational trauma and mental illness.”
