Horror classic among ‘best slasher films of all time’ lands on Netflix | Films | Entertainment

A Nineties horror movie dubbed “one of the best slasher films of all time”, praised for its tension and suspense, is set to stream on Netflix this week. I Know What You Did Last Summer, released in 1997, is the first instalment in the franchise and is based on the novel by Lois Duncan. The movie tells the story of four teenagers who are stalked by a killer after covering up a car accident the year before.

The cast includes stars like Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe as well as Freddie Prinze Jr, Johnny Galecki, and Anne Heche. The next movie in the franchise, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, came out the following year and saw Hewitt, Prinze Jr and Muse Watson reprise their roles. In 2006 a third movie titled I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer was released.

Earlier this year, a legacy sequel with an identical title to the original was made starring Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers – and Prinze Jr. Discussing the impact of the original 1997 film, Prinze Jr said: “It put me on the scene. Without that movie, there’s no She’s All That for me … It opened up a lot of doors for me in this business.”

The 49-year-old, who went on to marry Gellar, his co-star from the first movie, told Men’s Health: “I had an overall good experience on the film, and I had a better experience on the second one.”

One reviewer wrote on IMDb that the “classic teenage slasher is still one of the most memorable movies in the genre”. They added: “Although a slasher, the film has substance. The very idea of what these teenagers are going through, makes one wonder: what would I have done if I were in that situation?”

Another wrote: “This is a very underrated film, and I think it is one of the best slasher films of all time, a classic. It is an epic film from start to finish, with the first shot being one of the most epic opening shots ever on screen.”

A third posted: “This is one of my all-time favourite horror movies. For me, this is up there with the likes of Scream and Halloween. The film is suspenseful and fun which is everything that’s missing from horror films nowadays.”

Meanwhile, another audience member said the film was “an absolute blast from start to finish”, saying it is not just a horror movie but a “pop culture time capsule”. They said: “The film wastes no time getting to the heart of the tension, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat with every twist and turn.”

The film will be available on Netflix from November 1.
