Homeowners with air fryers urged to check one thing now to avoid £40,000 mistake
Air fryers have rapidly become a staple in British kitchens, praised for their speed, efficiency, and health benefits. But while these compact appliances promise crispy chips and reduced energy bills, fire experts are warning that improper use could leave homeowners with catastrophic damage, and insurance claims soaring past £40,000.
The surge in popularity has been staggering. Recent figures suggest that 68% of UK adults now own an air fryer. But with that rise has come an alarming spike in fire-related incidents, prompting urgent advice from fire services and insurers alike.
A survey commissioned by Aviva found that nearly one in five users have experienced a potential fire hazard from their device, whether through smoking, overheating, or full-blown kitchen fires.
Jonny Smith, a fire safety specialist at Crusader Fire, says the root of many of these accidents is surprisingly simple: skipping the manual.
“Air fryers are incredibly user-friendly, which leads many people to assume they can just plug them in and go,” he said. “But these machines generate intense heat, and when used without care, they can become a serious fire risk.”
Common mistakes include overcrowding the fryer basket, operating the appliance near flammable materials like tea towels or curtains, and failing to clean out grease residue.
Another frequent oversight is blocking the air vents or using oil inside the fryer, both of which can cause overheating and, in worst cases, combustion.
Aviva reports that the average insurance claim related to air fryer fires in 2024 has hit £29,555, with some reaching up to £80,000.
In many cases, homeowners may find that damage extends well beyond the kitchen, affecting electrical systems, smoke damage throughout the home, and even structural repairs.
To avoid disaster, experts are urging homeowners to check their air fryer setup now, ensuring it’s clean, well-ventilated, not overcrowded, and used away from flammable surfaces.
“It takes five minutes to read the manual, but it could save you thousands,” Smith added.
As air fryers continue to fly off the shelves, this small kitchen habit could make the difference between a delicious dinner, and a devastating mistake.
