As  temperatures rise and summer approaches, millions of Brits are diving into home improvement projects, but experts are warning that a simple mistake could land homeowners with a £5,000 fine. From garden landscaping to noisy power tool renovations, the warmer months see a spike in DIY activity across the UK.

But with over 1,200 noise complaints being lodged every single day, according to London Soundproofing, authorities are urging caution. The risk is breaching local noise regulations could see homeowners slapped with an abatement notice, and, if ignored, a fine of up to £5,000.

Grant Fraser, a wall soundproofing expert and founder of London Soundproofing, said: “People often underestimate how much everyday DIY noise can travel, especially in summer when windows are open and people are enjoying their gardens. It’s not about stopping the work, it’s about doing it considerately.”

There are an estimated 18 million homeowners across the UK, and many could be at risk if they don’t follow basic guidelines when tackling improvements.

To avoid being fined, Fraser advised homeowners to first check their local council’s permitted working hours, which are typically 9am to 6pm on weekdays, with limited hours on Saturdays and no noisy work on Sundays or Bank Holidays.

He also recommended giving neighbours advance warning of any planned projects. “A simple knock on the door or a friendly note can really help avoid complaints,” he said. “Even small gestures like a thank-you card or homemade treat can go a long way.”

Using quieter tools and taking regular breaks can also reduce the risk of tensions rising. And for households with young children or people working from home nearby, showing flexibility around noise-heavy tasks could prevent disputes before they start.

With outdoor DIY on the rise, councils are already on high alert for summer noise breaches. So whether you’re laying a patio, building a shed or giving your home a fresh lick of paint, it’s worth taking the time to plan your work respectfully.

So before you embark on a project this summer, don’t forget your neighbours. A little courtesy could save you a lot more than just peace of mind.
