High street chain recalls shampoo with users warned to ‘stop using it immediately’

Amika Mirrorball High Shine + Protect Antioxidant shampoo is being recalled by stores after it failed to meet regulatory requirements.

All units from Amika Mirrorball shampoo from 2023 and 2024 are included in the recall.

The shampoo comes in a pink patterned bottle and is sold as part of a set called Shine-O-Sphere, which also includes a hair mask, gloss spray as well as a conditioner.

The set, which claims to boost shine and make your hair shiny, has been recalled by retailers, including TK Maxx.

The set was sold in TK Maxx stores between April and December 2024.

Major online retailers, including Cult Beauty and Sephora, have also marked the product as out of stock.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), the body behind the shampoo recall, said: “The product poses a microbiological risk as it could have a change in odour and in rare cases cause temporary irritation due to the presence or potential presence of the bacterium P.Gergoviae.”

Amika reassured customers that none of their other products have been affected by this recall.

The brand said: “We have been monitoring recent feedback citing change in odour and in rare cases, temporary irritation.

“There have been no reported serious adverse heath events associated with using this product.

“We initiated this recall after determining that various production batches at our third-party manufacturers site do not meet our stringent quality standards, due to the presence of a bacterium called P.Gergoviae.

“If you have the product in your possession, please stop using it immediately, even if the product does not appear to have a change in odour or quality issue.

“We want to reassure you that, after consultation with an independent toxicology group, we are confident the use of this product does not pose a serious health or safety risk to healthy people.

“However, individuals with certain risk factors such as a weakened immune system or broken skin may be more susceptible to infection.”
