The film stars the Herencia de Patrones singer as a migrant worker trying to make it in música mexicana

The American Dream hits different in the first trailer for Clika. On Thursday, Sony Pictures and Rancho Humilde launched the trailer for the film starring Herencia de Patrones’ Jay Dee as a fruit picker chasing fame in the world of música mexicana.

“In Yuba City, I’ve been picking fruit for as long as I can remember. Migrant workers do what no one else wants to do in this country… Now, it’s my turn to live the American dream,” says Jay Dee in the trailer.

As his voice plays, quick cuts show him working the fields, recording music in a closet with a friend, spotting a foreclosure sign on his home, picking up wads of cash, and hauling stacks of marijuana. “My mom used to tell my dad, ‘What you do in the dark will always come to light,’” he says in one part. “I was about to find out what that means.”

The trailer then teases how Jay Dee tries to turn his life around and focus on pursuing music and leaving behind the drug trade. The film was directed by Michael Green, and co-written with Sean McBride and Jimmy Humilde, who also co-produced the film.

Humilde sat down with Variety for an in-depth profile on Rancho Humilde’s Hollywood takeover with the new movie. “Our story needed to start with Latinos and who we are as people and our struggles,” Humilde says. “We were originally proposed the idea of a reality show when we first met with [director Michael Greene] and Sean [McBride], but my brain was already committed to making a feature film. It’s the same feeling I got when we started making the music.”

Clika started filming in Yuba City, where Jay Dee is from, back in 2023. Humilde told Variety that they considered casting other stars, including Jesús Ortiz Paz, the frontman of Fuerza Regida. Jay Dee fit what they were looking for. “Jay Dee surprised us. He was able to [portray] a lot of the emotional parts of the film with his whole heart,” Humilde says.
