‘Heartbreaking’ crime drama ‘best film you’ll see’ on Film 4 tonight | Films | Entertainment
The surprise cinematic phenomenon that dominated the Oscars and catapulted its lead actress to stardom is set to grace Film 4 screens this Christmas Day.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, offered a distinctive take on the crime drama genre. The powerful narrative follows Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand), a grieving mother who wages a solitary battle against local law enforcement over their failure to apprehend her daughter’s killer.
Located in the fictitious Missouri town of Ebbing, seven months following the horrific rape and killing, Mildred commissions three prominent billboards demanding accountability from the authorities over their inaction.
The production proved to be a commercial triumph, raking in an impressive $162million at the box office. Critical acclaim followed suit, with five BAFTA triumphs, four Golden Globe victories and an extraordinary seven Oscar nods.
McDormand secured the Academy Award for Best Actress whilst Sam Rockwell claimed the Best Supporting Actor trophy. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri also clinched the coveted Best Picture Oscar, reports the Mirror.
During her rousing acceptance address, McDormand championed diversity within the film industry. She said: “Okay, look around everybody. Look around, ladies and gentlemen, because we all have stories to tell and projects we need financed. I have two words to leave with you tonight, ladies and gentlemen: inclusion rider.”
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri boasts a commendable 90 percent approval rating on the film review aggregator site, Rotten Tomatoes.

The comedy, the tragedy, the plot, the twists, the acting, all amazing!” A fourth was full of praise for the cast, director Martin McDonagh, and plot, stating: “It’s wonderful and weird and brilliant.
