Harry Styles Madison Square Garden Residency: Best NYC Moments
He embraced the Big Apple — and it embraced him back
New York, baby, always jacked up. Let’s face it, NYC is just a different place when Harry Styles is in town. This is a notoriously tough city to impress — so many superstars pass through here without making a mark. But as soon as Harry moved in for his Together, Together tour, for an unprecedented run of sold-out shows in Madison Square Garden — 30 nights in all, starting in late August — he completely took over the town.
Excitement has been in the air since his residency began, turning the whole city into Harry’s House. He invaded the Garden while the historic venue was already having a big summer, after the Knicks scored their NBA championship. (And as Harry quipped, “They also do weddings!”) His shows have been joyful celebrations, with a whole new set list. (“Kiwi”!!!) But that’s just the beginning. Here’s to the love affair between Harry and New York City — when this guy’s here, everything’s coming up roses.

Harry Walks the City Streets

Image Credit: XNY/Star Max/GC Images Part of the city’s obsession with Harry Styles has been his determination to walk to the gig nearly every day, taking the stroll from Brooklyn into midtown Manhattan, right to the stage door. This is a highly unusual flex for a superstar, to say the least. But what a power move — no handlers, no entourage, just the artist taking to the city streets he loves, like a real New Yorker, without anyone hassling him. He’s got his shades, his trusty “Techno Is My Boyfriend” baseball hat, and the street cool of the urban flaneur. Meteorological fact: this is the reason why NYC weather has been so freakishly sunny, as Harry Summer turns into Slutty Pumpkin Autumn. It turns out Mother Nature is a KissCo girlie. —Rob Sheffield

The Knicks and Harry Share MSG

Image Credit: Anthony Pham* Styles has taken over the Garden for 30 nights, but he knows it’s still the home of NBA champions, the Knicks. On night nine, the “King of New York” Jalen Brunson came out to see what the British musician was all about. “He’s just trying to have a quiet night out… not a chance. It’s like Mickey Mouse going to Disneyland,” Styles said as he saluted the MVP. A few weeks later, the musician returned the favor and went to the Garden on his day off to attend the Knicks first game of the season. Styles wasn’t quite the team’s lucky charm (Lebron James’ 76ers won the game) but he did get to see the team unveil their championship banner. Then, on his last night, it was Brunson himself who presented Styles with his MSG banner. —M.G.

At one point, Styles even flashed the duo a peace sign to shout them out. Later in the residency, Styles’ mom chose to spend her birthday at her son’s show — and even got a “Happy Birthday” sing-along from a sold-out MSG audience, and his father was seen in the audience on Night 28. —M.G.

The singer blends in with the masses walking the streets of the city during his commute to MSG, but once he’s inside and fans are flocking to their seats, the anticipation is high for what he’ll be wearing when the curtains are pulled back. Most nights, he opted for some variation of a suit (the jacket always comes off within a few songs). Some nights, he turned up the heat. “It’s a Saturday night,” Styles said during a show in September, “and I’ve got on a pair of slutty little shorts, let’s go!” —L.P.

Harry Plays “Ever Since New York”

Image Credit: Anthony Pham* On October 28, Styles threw in an emotional shock for the final pre-Harryween show. When he strummed the opening notes of “Ever Since New York,” the entire building had convulsions. He hadn’t done that classic in almost exactly four years — the last time he sang it was also at the Garden, on the final night of his 2022 residency. Both nights, he busted out the song as a surprise, with no warning or explanation, because he is an evil, evil, evil boy. (That was also the night when MSG surprised him by hanging a banner to commemorate his 15 sold-out shows.) “Ever Since New York” carries so much history for him — it was the opening song at Harry’s first NYC show, at Radio City, just his fifth solo show ever. A poignant moment? Tell us something we don’t already know. —R.S.

Harry Delights New York With “Sweet Creature”

Image Credit: Anthony Pham* Harry was three months into his global Together, Together tour, but he completely revamped the show for New York. Opening Night had one shocker after another — but the biggest surprise came when he busted out “Sweet Creature,” the beloved fan fave from his solo debut, for the first time since 2018. (The fan next to me, a total stranger, grabbed my arm and said, “This isn’t happening!”) It was a nightly acoustic showcase for guitarist Mitch Rowland and singers Laura Bibbs and Lorren Chiodo — so intimate it felt like a love song to the city, with the refrain, “You bring me home.” Halfway through the run, they changed it to “From the Dining Table,” bringing Harry’s whole story full circle. —R.S.

Harry Champions Local NYC Musicians

Image Credit: Anthony Pham* On each night of the residency, Styles was joined by his backing band but those five members weren’t the only musicians that helped him perform each night. Throughout his stay, the megastar tapped 15 musicians from Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians, the largest local union of professional musicians in the world. Dan Point, the union’s president, told City and State that Styles “came in and we learned that he himself, and obviously his team who helped make it happen, was adamant that he wanted people who were from New York City.” Talk about giving back to the Big Apple. —M.G.
