A shopper has shared his verdict after splashing out £160 on a single piece of fruit from the world-renowned department store, Harrods in London.

Carmie Sellitto turned to TikTok after his extravagant purchase from the Fresh Market Hall, confessing he “couldn’t believe” the amount he’d spent on the Japanese-imported delicacy. “Harrods has just come out with a £160 mango,” he announced, displaying the fruit’s vibrant packaging which he likened to a “giant Capri-Sun” drink.

Opening the lid revealed the mango nestled in a pink basket-style holder, leading Carmie to question: “Who is actually spending £160 on a mango? Are you actually mad?”.

However, for his video’s sake, he had parted with the cash. The Miyazaki mango originates from Japan’s Miyazaki Prefecture, renowned for its brilliant hue, sweetness and intense taste, which has earned them the moniker Egg of the Sun.

“It does come in a really pretty bed though,” Carmie conceded as some comfort. “And it’s massive, it’s literally the size of my head and the most expensive mango in the world.”

Yet does the flavour warrant such an eye-watering cost? “I just want to start crying,” Carmie exclaimed in wonder as he sampled it. It’s just so juicy. This has to be the juiciest and best mango I have ever eaten in my life.”

Indeed, displaying the mango’s vibrant interior, he continued to gush: “Each bite is like having a huge sip of mango juice and the skin even tastes so good as well.”

However, while admitting “there is no way on earth” he would ever purchase the item again, Carmie revealed to his followers: “It is absolutely amazing. I just wish you guys could taste it through the screen.”

His final judgement? “I’m going to go ahead and rate it an easy 10 out of 10,” he declared.

Karmie’s video attracted over one million TikTok viewers in merely 24 hours, with hundreds flocking to the comments section to share their thoughts on his purchase.

“Just get a £5 honey mango from a Pakistani store, I promise it’s way better,” one person suggested. A second concurred, writing: “Pakistani honey mangoes are the sweetest in the world.”

A third individual responded with sympathy: “I hope you get your money back with likes and everything because that is so freaking expensive.” Meanwhile, a fourth TikTok user raged: “I’ve had some good mangoes for less than 50 cents, why the hell is the same mango £160?”

Harrods promotes the fruit in its fresh produce section online: “Rambutan, prickly pear, Sicilian lemon – our range of fruit is sourced from where it grows the best, when it grows the best. Visit our counter for the season’s finest and rarest varieties and for an extra boost of vitamins, why not treat yourself to a fresh juice or smoothie from the juice bar?”

The store’s mangoes are available Monday to Saturday between 10am and 9pm, and on Sundays from 11:30am to 6pm.
