A traveller has stunned people after sharing her “genius” method for safeguarding her bag from pickpockets. In a TikTok video that’s since gone viral, @Charlottenorth showcased her technique for creating a “makeshift lock” on your handbag.

The “smart” approach has wowed viewers, with fans hailing it as “the best hack.” The trick is “so simple”, as you’ll only need one item to try it. In her post, Charlotte recommended using a claw clip to “lock” bags. Social media users said you could also use carabiners for the same effect, reports the Mirror.

Charlotte explained: “How to lock your bag when travelling – I might just be dumb but I figured this out halfway through my trip and it felt revolutionary.” The demonstration saw her feed a hair clip through the zip and then clip it to her bag’s strap to create a “makeshift lock.”

TikTok viewers loved the idea, and the post gained over 100k likes. A social media user said: “I love this omg how smart!!” A second fan wrote: “So simple yet genius!” Someone else shared: “That’s so smart omg!! Thanks for sharing!”

A different comment said: “This is so smart!!” Charlotte replied: “Honestly felt so much better walking round crowded areas like this!!!”

Offering a similar tip, a viewer shared: “I’ve been doing this with a carabiner and it’s perfect when I travel!!” Another reply read: “Been doing this for a year and it’s the best hack!!” Someone shared: “I always do this! Looks cute and my stuff is safe.”

There was more praise. Impressed by the idea, a fan said: “Ohhhhhh! I think I’ll do this for my upcoming Italy trip this summer!” Another travel lover wrote: “Ohhh, I might do this for our summer euro trip.”

The Metropolitan Police’s website states: “Remember, having a zipped bag doesn’t mean you’re totally safe. Thieves have been known to walk behind victims while slowly unzipping bags. Yes, they can be that bold. So, never underestimate a pickpocket.”

The webpage also includes dos and don’ts to help keep your belongings safe. The tips include carrying bags in front of you or diagonally across your chest and concealing your wallet in a buttoned or zipped pocket.

The guidance adds: “Pickpockets also operate in shops and department stores, where people are more likely to be standing still, distracted and so paying less attention to their belongings, making them an easier target.

“Be more aware of your surroundings in busy shops and shopping centres because they’re ideal places for pickpockets, as it’s easier for them to brush past people, take items and blend into the crowd.”
