A war film rooted in an extraordinary true Second World War story is broadcasting on Film4 tonight, with viewers hailing it as “emotionally gripping.”

The 2019 epic Midway, helmed by Independence Day filmmaker Roland Emmerich, presents a sweeping wartime drama that chronicles the crucial WWII Battle of Midway, featuring an impressive ensemble cast including Ed Skrein, Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Nick Jonas, Mandy Moore, Dennis Quaid and Woody Harrelson.

This 2019 production serves as a contemporary reimagining of the 1971 war picture, depicting the critical World War II Battle of Midway whilst dramatising the U.S. Navy’s intelligence operations and valiant efforts to respond to Japan’s shock assault on Pearl Harbor and eventually shift the conflict’s momentum.

The narrative tracks pivotal personalities such as Admiral Nimitz alongside brave aviators as they crack Japanese strategies, suffer devastating casualties, and execute audacious retaliatory missions, building to a conclusive triumph over the Imperial Japanese Navy. The drama has received glowing reviews on the film ratings website Rotten Tomatoes.

One impressed viewer awarded it five stars, writing: “A great war movie, the story is unbelievable, just have to take the rest of it in stride an appreciate the gravity of what happened in those battles and the men who overcame amazing odds to do something unbelievably brave in service of their country, the movie takes you back to a time where people were built different had pride in their nation, and stood for something greater than themselves, be thankful that people took the time to tell their story. Emotionally gripping and has you on the edge of you seat showing you the full weight of reality the dive bombers faced.”, reports the Mirror.

Another equally enthralled spectator also gave it five stars, saying: “What an amazing thrill ride cinema! And great True story! God bless the US navy/Air Force! 10/10.”

Another added: “Great heroes who helped us turn the war in our favour when it really, really mattered. Oh, and a great movie, too! !”.

Despite some mixed reviews, many have encouraged viewers to disregard them and give the film a chance. One argued: “Another example of why I always ignore “professional” critics reviews. The Tomato Meter on this is just wrong. This was a well done retelling of a classic story.

“There was so much going on in the world and the region at the time, and the way this story was written did a good job of including most of it in a relativity short run time without bogging it down. Its seems the lessons and sacrifice of World War II are lost on so many young people in the west. Hopefully movies like this will encourage people to learn more.”

Another wrote: “Perhaps not the smoothest film. And it doesn’t have a particularly outstanding score. However, it offers some great spectacle, and also does a good job showing how intense and terrifying the events were that this film is based on truly were. It also shows us both perspectives, and I appreciate the more nuanced approach.”

The picture was also recognised for depicting some of the almost incredible incidents which genuinely occurred during WWII.

The filmmakers collaborated extensively with historians from the U.S. Navy’s Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) to guarantee precision in both the screenplay and production, incorporating real events such as Bruno Gaido’s courageous deed of operating a stationary aircraft’s machine gun to bring down a plummeting Japanese bomber that was on course to strike the USS Enterprise.
