A beloved comedy will soon be leaving Netflix, but there’s still time to watch the “genius” film. Happy Gilmore is a 1996 American sports comedy film starring Adam Sandler in the title role.

The film follows Happy Gilmore, a failed ice hockey player with a unique talent for golf, who seeks to raise enough money to prevent his grandmother’s house from being foreclosed. Directed by Dennis Dugan and produced by Robert Simonds, the supporting cast includes Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and Carl Weathers. The film was a commercial success, earning £31.4 million on a £9.1 million budget, and won an MTV Movie Award for Best Fight, shared by Sandler and The Price Is Right host Bob Barker. It has developed a cult following, especially in the golf community, where fans often attempt and imitate the “Happy Gilmore swing”, featuring a walking or running approach.

Fans who were discussing the film on Reddit called Happy Gilmore “pure comic genius”. One called it a “clever spoof on professional golf” and “Sandler’s best work” with a “top-notch supporting cast”.

Another said: “I’ve never laughed harder or longer in a movie theatre.” A third user said that Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison (Sandler’s previous film) are “fantastic movies that don’t take themselves seriously and are actually funny”.

Despite this, the film was not well-received by critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an approval rating of 65% based on 60 reviews, with an average rating of 6/10.

The website’s critics consensus reads: “Those who enjoy Adam Sandler’s schtick will find plenty to love in this gleefully juvenile take on professional golf; those who don’t, however, will find it unfunny and forgettable.”

Happy Gilmore is leaving Netflix on December 9, but its sequel, Happy Gilmore 2, will still be available to watch on the streaming platform.

Released on Netflix in July, the film follows Gilmore returning to professional golf to help pay for his daughter’s overseas ballet school following his wife’s death, which led him to relapse into alcoholism.
