Gemini isn’t replacing Google Assistant on Android just yet
Google isn’t ready to replace Assistant with Gemini on Android devices just yet. The company said on Friday that it will “continue our work to upgrade Assistant users to Gemini on mobile devices into 2026,” instead of its original plans to make the switch by the end of 2025.
“We’re adjusting our previously announced timeline to make sure we deliver a seamless transition,” Google says. Once the transition away from Google Assistant is complete, users will no longer be able to access the voice assistant on devices that meet the minimum requirements to run Gemini. Users also won’t be able to download the Google Assistant app.
This year, Google took steps toward replacing Assistant with Gemini on Android by giving users the ability to initiate phone calls, set timers, and send messages through Gemini without Gemini Apps Activity toggled on. The change allows people to use Gemini’s assistant-like capabilities while opting out of having their interactions used for AI training.
