Cinema’s top composers — including Mark Mothersbaugh, John Carpenter, and Hildur Guðnadóttir — were slated to perform their scores live

The inaugural Future Ruins Festival — run by Oscar-winning duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross — has been cancelled a month before it was set to take place at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center on Nov. 8.

“Unfortunately Future Ruins will not move forward this year,” the festival announced on Friday. “The reality is, due to a number of logistical challenges and complications, we feel we cannot provide the experience that’s defined what this event was always intended to be. Rather than compromise, we’re choosing to re-think and re-evaluate.” Per the statement, refunds will be automatically issued and ticket holders should expect an email with additional information.

Along with the Nine Inch Nails bandmates, Future Ruins’ lineup also included sets by Devo singer and Wes Anderson composer Mark Mothersbaugh, horror director and composer John Carpenter, Oscar-winning Joker composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, and Questlove performing the film scores of Curtis Mayfield.

Other artists on the roster included Danny Elfman, Stranger Things duo Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, Italian group Goblin, Terence Blanchard, Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow, Isobel Waller-Bridge, a performance of Howard Shore’s Crash score, and more. Many of the top composers would have been performing their scores live for the first time.

Earlier this summer, Nine Inch Nails kicked off their Peel It Back Tour, marking the band’s first show run since 2022. The European leg of the trek took place in June and July, while the North American tour began in August.

Reznor and Ross have delivered a slew of musical projects of late, scoring Luca Guadagnino’s two films last year, Queer and Challengers, and leading the music for the director’s upcoming picture, After the Hunt. The pair also scored the Apple TV+ film The Gorge, which was released earlier this year. They released the soundtrack for TRON: Ares in September.
