Travelling with just hand luggage can be tricky for many, especially if you’re staying at your destination for a week. Not only do you have to pack all your fancy outfits for each evening, but also swimwear and toiletries.

Nobody wants to get to the airport to be told their bag is too big and they’ll have to pay for extra luggage as they didn’t pack properly.

It seems as though airlines are changing their carry-on parameters every single day to catch you out, but one frequent flyer has found a way around it – and it’ll set you back just 30p.

Siani, who posts on TikTok as @sianitravels, shared a way you can get extra toiletries in your bag when travelling, meaning you don’t have to worry about ditching your expensive moisturiser, or your favourite shampoo and conditioner combo.

She made a video replying to another comment which asked: “What was the hack for fitting the toiletries?”

Siani explained: “So anything you couldn’t fit in your hand luggage, you should put in a spare bag. Once you get through security, go to any duty-free store.”

She said she likes to go to WHSmith, as their plastic bags fit a substantial amount of stuff in them, meaning you won’t have to stress.

“Then I unload my extra bag, and I put all those bits and bobs into this new duty-free bag, because the hack is that you’re allowed one duty-free bag with your carry-on luggage,” Siani explained.

She then said she folds up her spare bag, pops that into the WHSmith, and then she’s ready to go. “Bish, bash, bosh,” she joked.

Someone pointed out: “Yeah, it’s for duty-free items bought in the airport… so if the stuff is obviously not just purchased, they can still charge you.”

However, when was the last time someone asked to see inside your duty-free bag to check that everything had actually been purchased at the airport? It’s unlikely, but still a risk if you’re trying to get away with paying extra.

“I thought the duty-free bag was supposed to be security sealed?” a woman asked, however, someone pointed out that’s only if you purchase alcohol at the airport because you’re prohibited from drinking your own duty-free on the plane.

An airport worker claimed: “Hey so I work at the airport. If you have too many bags, even from duty-free, they can deny you boarding unless you leave your duty-free shopping behind if there’s no space in the overhead bins. I’ve seen it happen a few times.”

“I have been made to put my purchases in my hand luggage twice before now I don’t risk it,” a woman pointed out.

So, it’s definitely worth trying this hack with caution, but it worked for Siani!

Would you give this a go to get more of your stuff on the plane free of charge? Let us know in the comments…
