To coincide with the band’s 30th anniversary, Foo Fighters returned Wednesday with “Today’s Song,” their first new music in two years.

Dave Grohl revealed the song on the band’s official website, accompanied by a reflective 13-minute audio statement where he acknowledged, for the first time, the departure of drummer Josh Freese, who joined the band following the death of Taylor Hawkins.

“Over the years, we’ve had moments of unbridled joy and moments of devastating heartbreak. Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat. We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can’t go it alone,” Grohl said.

“It should go without saying that without the boundless energy of William Goldsmith, the seasoned wisdom of Franz Stahl, and the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese, this story would be incomplete, so we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the time, music, and memories that we shared with each of them over the years. Thank you, gentlemen.”

Grohl’s lengthy statement reminisces about encountering Nate Mendel for the first time on Thanksgiving in 1994, and how that chance meeting resulted in the birth of the Foo Fighters. “A few heaping plates of food, a few bottles of wine, one thing leading to another, and before long we had started a new band with other dear friends, Pat Smear and William Goldsmith,” Grohl said. “We called it Foo Fighters.” The band’s self-titled debut album arrived on June 26, 1995.

Later in the note, Grohl paid tribute to his late friend and band mate Hawkins. “And… Taylor. Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever,” Grohl added. “The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivaled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words. Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination.”

“Today’s Song” itself echoes many of the themes in Grohl’s note, namely the passage of time. “Two sides to a river / Too troubled to cross / It might take you under / Today’s song,” Grohl sings on the track. “We’ll drown in the middle / Which side are you on / One way or another / Today’s song.”

The track marks the Foo Fighters’ first new original music since their 2023 album But Here We Are; the band quietly resurfaced for the first time amid all the domestic drama recently to release a Minor Threat cover.

It appears Grohl and company are revving up for their grand return as the band has announced October concerts in Indonesia, Singapore, and Japan, their first shows together in over a year.
