Supermarket chain Farmfoods has announced a product recall of a popular snack, after allergens were not highlighted on the label. The announcement was made on Thursday, February 12, with customers being urged not to eat the product if they have purchased the item.

The Food Standards Agency shared that the recall is specific to England and Wales, but everyone should be aware, just in case. It revealed that the Ritz Cheese Sandwich is the product in question, explaining that it contains milk, soya and wheat (gluten), but that these allergens were “not emphasised” on the product’s label. The announcement also highlighted that the recall only affects products that originate from Indonesia, and does not affect products originating from other countries.

The FSA’s risk statement read: “The product contains milk, soya and wheat (gluten), making it a health risk to those with an allergy or intolerance to milk, an allergy to soya or an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, or with coeliac disease.”

The product affected by the recall included:

  • Ritz Cheese Sandwich with the pack size 91g – all batch codes

Farmfoods explained in its statement: “We have been notified of a labelling error on the above product. The label does not adequately emphasise wheat, cheese, whey and soy as allergens.

“This product is therefore a risk to the population suffering from wheat (gluten), milk and soy allergies, intolerances, and sensitivities to those ingredients.”

Customers who’ve bought the Ritz Cheese Sandwich 91g are being told not to eat the product if the risk statement applies to them. Farmfoods reiterated that all batch codes of the product are affected, clarifying that no other Ritz products are affected by the recall.

The supermarket explained: “Please return the affected product to the store, where the product was purchased, for a full refund. No receipt is required.”

Farmfoods’ point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling this product, and on their website. These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.

Farmfoods continued: “We take consumer safety very seriously and sincerely apologise to our loyal customers for this situation and any inconvenience it may have caused.”

If customers have any questions, queries or concerns, they are advised to contact customer services on 01217007160.
