‘Excellent’ forgotten Western with ‘biggest star ever’ now streaming | Films | Entertainment

Fans of classic Westerns and musicals are urged to rediscover this hidden gem now streaming for free.

The movie also stars the ‘King’ of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley, who is widely considered to be one of the greatest singers of all time.

Directed by Frederick De Cordova, the 1966 film sees Elvis star opposite actress and singer Donna Douglas, who is known for her role as Elly May Clampett on The Beverly Hillbillies.

While the flick has just 49% on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter, plenty of fans have suggested it is a “classic” hidden gem and maybe even a “guilty pleasure” watch.

Frankie and Johnny is a feel-good musical western perfect for movie fans in search of some serious nostalgia, and now they can stream it for free on Pluto TV.

The synopsis for the movie reads: “Habitual gambler and musician Johnny performs at a riverboat casino on the Mississippi River, along with his girlfriend, Frankie.

“A rash of bad luck leads Johnny to a fortuneteller, who informs him of a redheaded good luck charm.

“Enter Nellie Bly, the lover of Johnny’s boss, whose presence coincides with a change in Johnny’s luck.

“But Frankie grows jealous of Johnny’s new acquaintance, and the conflict comes to a head during a masquerade ball.”

Fans took to the comments section on Rotten Tomatoes to share their thoughts on the forgotten film, with one writing: “I thought it was a Classic, especially because Elvis is my favorite! 🙂 Not only is he a great singer/dancer but he is a great actor!”

“Awesome!!!!! Elvis is the best!” a second wrote, as another agreed: “Lots of action in that one. Very good.”

“Excellent Elvis movie,” a fourth wrote, while another enthused: “GREAT MOVIE AND IT IS SO COOL!!!!!!!!!!!”

One more viewer advised: “Recommend this one… In terms of looking into the life of a gambler… Plus Elvis Presley was great in this movie.”

Meanwhile, other fans were less keen on the flick, with one writing: “I enjoyed the cast in this one as Donna & Elvis worked well together but, the story could have been better.”

“Not a great movie but it is tolerable,” another shared, as a third concurred: “Fairly weak. There are much better Elvis movies.”

However, other viewers suggested the film made for a good guilty pleasure watch, with one confessing: “Ok. This is an awful film. I admit it. But it is a guilty pleasure that always makes me smile.”
