Black can be a staple for many people’s wardrobe, but it can be a nightmare when your favourite garmet starts to become a shade of grey after repeated washes.

The result is an unsuccessful attempt at rocking that sleek all-black ensemble.

Look no further, suggests one lifestyle guru, who insists the secret to prevent fading lies in our kitchen cupboard.

Mary Futher, also known by her social media moniker ‘Madame Sweat,’ regularly dispenses cleaning and personal hygiene hacks to her followers.

This savvy expert has covered topics ranging from tackling body odour to preventing clothes from acquiring that dank smell.

In a widely praised video earning over 39,000 likes, she stated: “If you want your black clothes to stay black like this, I have an easy tip for you.”

She then teased there are “two natural things you’ve already got in your kitchen” that may very well be the antidote to the issue, reports the Mirror.

She elaborated, saying: “Either vinegar or salt. Put a quarter cup of vinegar in the drum with your detergent. It helps set the dye.”

“Alternatively, use salt. You’ll need half a cup of salt which you sprinkle over your all-black laundry. Keep in mind, water temperature is key. So wash them in cold water and set the washing machine on speed wash.”

Laundry expert Mary has issued a stark warning about drying black clothes, cautioning against using the dryer or hanging them on the line.

She advised: “You’ve got to get a drying rack Don’t put it outside. Leave it in your washroom or laundry room to dry.”

TikTok users were astounded by the revelation, with many eager to try out the tip. One user exclaimed: “Never dryer! Love the vinegar tip, I’ve always used vinegar in whites but now my all black too. Thank you.”

Another grateful user responded: “Thank you so much for the tip,” and a third praised: “Thank You, Mrs. excellent advice. U SLAY!!!”

However, not everyone was sold on the idea, as skepticism emerged in the comments.

A doubter stated: “Nope, cold water green Palmolive dish soap dry on delicate or line dry. Never fade..”

Another shared their experience: “That’s what my family do … detergent and vinegar and my black clothes still fade.”

Mary’s guidance comes on the heels of her revealing just how long wet laundry can sit before becoming mouldy. Many have experienced the frustration of forgetting a load of washing, only to find it reeking of mildew later, necessitating a rewash.

But with Mary’s tips, followers now know the critical timeframe to retrieve their laundry and avoid extra work.
