Drivers could face fine and invalid insurance over number plate issue

British motorists are being warned they could incur fines of up to £1,000, fail their MOT, and potentially invalidate their car insurance policy if discovered with non-compliant registration plates. Whilst many drivers turn to online forums such as Reddit seeking advice about their vehicle number plates, securing expert guidance remains essential.
With this in mind, motor insurance experts at Quotezone.co.uk are emphasising the legal requirements as the new ’26’ registration plates launched on March 1.
Registration plates are issued twice yearly throughout the UK and generally see a surge in buyers keen to obtain the newest plate – either to personalise their vehicle or as an investment, potentially enhancing the car’s resale value.
For those wishing to add some individuality to their registered number plate, they must stay aware of the various restrictions. UK number plates must be produced from reflective material, cannot include a background pattern, and the characters must be solid black, non-reflective, and permanently attached.
The characters must also meet particular height and dimension specifications with a standard font, spacing and no italics – intended to improve number plate readability. The DVLA does permit 3D characters and the display of certain flags, symbols and identifiers – whilst zero-emission vehicles can lawfully show a green stripe.
Insurance providers require that vehicles remain roadworthy at all times, and drivers caught with number plates violating these standards risk having their motor insurance invalidated, leaving them entirely unprotected.
Should a collision occur, this could give insurers valid grounds to refuse claims or cancel policies outright.
Beyond these strict regulations, motorists are warned that driving a vehicle with a number plate concealed by dirt or mud could lead to fines reaching £1,000.
Recent examination of data regarding illegal number plate incidents revealed more than 20,000 cases nationwide, with Humberside appearing as one of Britain’s most severely affected regions, recording 122 incidents per 100,000 residents and totalling 1,161 violations.
The dramatic increase in such offences has triggered renewed calls for stricter regulation and enforcement, with thousands of documented cases involving unlawful number plates – including so-called ‘ghost plates’, which use reflective materials to evade detection by speed and ANPR cameras.
A pilot scheme utilising state-of-the-art technology to identify these invisible plates is currently underway in the West Midlands, reportedly catching more than 4,000 offenders within a fortnight.
Greg Wilson, motor insurance specialist and CEO at Quotezone.co.uk said: “It can be exciting for drivers when the new number plates are issued in the spring, a chance for a new car with a brand-new plate can be an investment and increase the resale value plus first dibs on any interesting, personalised combinations.
“However, it’s important that vehicles are kept legal and roadworthy. Number plate regulations are set by the DVLA so that vehicles can be easily identified by the police and ANPR cameras – to help monitor and improve road safety.
“Drivers are warned they face costly fines and a failed MOT test plus the risk of voiding their car insurance if their licence plate is dirty, obscured or not up to code.”
He added: “With the new 2026 plates launching in March, we’re issuing drivers a timely reminder to check their number plates are clean and comply with all DVLA regulations, especially those who have reprinted their plates in a bid to personalise the vehicle.
“The police are clamping down on offenders who are actively trying to evade ANPR cameras so it is worth double-checking plates if drivers have recently bought a new car, and speak to a professional if anything seems suspicious.”
