A professional dog trainer has warned owners to avoid one “heartbreaking” problem with their beloved pets “at all costs”. Millions of people across the globe welcome dogs into their homes, with the animals celebrated for being loving and fiercely loyal to their human families.

While the attraction of owning a dog is undeniable, certain breeds are more susceptible to health problems than others, and every dog has their own quirks, personality traits and behavioural patterns that ought to be considered. It’s vital to conduct thorough research before taking on the responsibility and commitment that comes with pet ownership.

Many people – both existing owners and those contemplating getting a pet – turn to social media in search of advice and guidance from seasoned professionals and experts who work closely with animals.

Canine behaviourist Will Atherton has amassed a substantial following on social media through his regular uploads, which showcase his knowledge and expertise. In a recent Instagram video that has garnered tens of thousands of views, the specialist shared his views on something owners must avoid doing with their puppies.

Speaking directly to camera, Will began: “This is the worst behaviour that your puppy could display and grow into as they get older. For me, it’s not aggression, it’s not reactivity, it’s separation anxiety.”

Separation anxiety is a widespread problem among dog and can trigger many issues. It occurs when a dog experiences profound distress following separation from their owners when they leave the house, or sometimes even when they’re simply not in the same room. It can result in destructive behaviour, indoor accidents, excessive howling and barking, pacing or panting.

Will continued: “As a clinical canine behaviourist, I think that that is one of the most heartbreaking and most stressful behaviours that we have to help owners and their dogs overcome.

“The thing is, if you want to raise your puppy right first time round, avoid some of these huge problem behaviours long-term, for separation anxiety there’s a very simple solution, and that solution is crate training.”

Crate training entails establishing a secure space, such as a kennel or purpose-built cage, which a dog progressively learns to enjoy spending time in.

It functions as a sanctuary for them to rest and unwind in, and can also be utilised for travel purposes.

To encourage a dog to voluntarily spend time in their designated crate, it’s crucial they perceive it as a positive and comfortable space – it should never be a place used for punishment.

Will said he always crate trains any puppies he works with. He added: “Crate training will prevent and solve 99 per cent of problem behaviours that owners face inside of the house.”

The expert noted crate training “isn’t that difficult to teach” and could prove the solution to addressing the “heartbreaking” problem of separation anxiety.

Prior to getting a dog, thorough research is essential to assess whether you are truly capable of meeting a dog’s needs. Training is often vital, and it’s worth noting that not all dogs are suited to first-time owners.

If you’re considering welcoming a dog into your home, think about the advantages of rehoming a puppy or dog from a charity or local shelter rather than buying from a breeder.
