Dog trainer shares canine breed that’s not ‘difficult’ to own

Dog trainers revealed the canine breeds they recommend for different people with certain lifestyles.

Canine trainer Ross Macnamara made his own TikTok video expressing his own thoughts on why you should get one specific ‘difficult’ dog breed.

Ross explained how he’d seen a dog trainer tell people not to get a Border Collie unless they were willing to spend two or more hours a day to walk them.

“No, that is false. That is fake news, that is misleading. That’s way too much” Ross said.

The expert explained you don’t have to take them on hours long hikes every day for them to have a good life.

“I take my Border Collie out and I kick a football around, acting like it’s a sheep. That’s what we do,” he said. “And we do that for 20 minutes twice a day, and then he is absolutely fine.

“It’s way easier on both of us because we’re actually meeting his specific needs as a Border Collie. He wants to chase things, herd things, and potentially even bite things, and so I let him do that as opposed to just going nowhere for no particular reason, which is what a two hour hike would be for him.”

He went on to explain while a two hour walk isn’t a bad thing for either him or his dog, he argues it’s too much for both the pup and owner, and that breed fulfillment is more important for the canine’s wellbeing.

“I’m not trying to act like breed fulfillment is easy, it can be hard sometimes and it does take a hell of a lot of consistency, but not two hours,” Ross said.

He wrote in the description of his video: “Border Collies are nutcases but let them be nutcases in one particular thing a few times a day and you’ll have a happy dog.”

One user shared her own experience owning a Border Collie, saying: “My Border Collie sleeps for about 16 hours a day. The other 8 she’s begging for cheese.”

“YES! Had a woman call me selfish for having 2 Kelpie x Collies because I don’t walk them for THREE hours a day,” another user said.

A third user wrote: “Our Border Collie has a 10-15 min walk early morning. Then he has a good sniff around the garden, looking for intruders etc. Proceeds to then nap on and off, sometimes rag a toy to death.”
