Dog owners realise what pet is trying to say when it licks

Many dog owners see licking as either an adorable habit or a mildly irritating one, but experts say the behaviour actually carries an important message. According to vet Dr Julian Norton, dogs often lick their owners to strengthen their bond and seek reassurance, rather than simply show affection.

Speaking on behalf of Pure Pet Food, Dr Norton explained that dogs view their human families as part of their pack and use physical gestures to communicate and maintain connections.

“People sometimes ask why dogs nudge and nuzzle with their noses,” he said. “Part of the reason is that dogs really feel part of the family and part of the tribe, and they’re trying to get attention by nuzzling you.”

He added that licking serves a similar purpose, helping dogs feel closer to their owners and gain their attention.

“It’s quite endearing. I think it’s a bit like when dogs come and lick us on our face or hands or that sort of thing. They’re just really wanting to be part of the family and get some attention,” Dr Norton said.

The expert revealed that licking can also be a way for dogs to emotionally check in on their owners.

“Whether it’s a tender lick on the hand or an enthusiastic one on the face, your dog could be attempting to gauge your mood. It’s their way of expressing ‘I care’,” he explained.

However, licking is just one of many ways dogs communicate through body language. Tail wagging, one of the most recognisable canine behaviours, is often misunderstood by owners.

While many people assume a wagging tail always signals happiness, experts say the meaning depends on how the tail is moving. A high, relaxed wag is usually associated with excitement and friendliness, while a low, slow wag can indicate anxiety, uncertainty or caution.

Another surprising behaviour is the so-called “dog smile”. Some dogs pull back their lips in a way that closely resembles a human grin when they are feeling playful, relaxed or content.

When combined with loose body language and a wagging tail, the expression is often a sign that a dog is feeling comfortable and happy in its surroundings.

Experts say understanding these subtle signals can help owners build a stronger relationship with their pets. From affectionate licks and gentle nudges to tail wags and doggy grins, these behaviours are all part of how dogs communicate their feelings and strengthen their bond with the people they love.
