A Golden Retriever puppy left his owner in tears after she discovered why he kept choosing to sleep in the same location within their home.

Eight-week-old Humphrey initially left Lily puzzled by his insistence on repeatedly dozing beneath her living room’s TV cabinet. “He did this for the first few days with us and we didn’t know why,” Lily disclosed in a TikTok post.

However, she explained she subsequently “made a connection” which “makes so much more sense”. The Golden Retriever owner then posted a throwback photograph featuring a newborn Humphrey alongside his siblings, which seemed to provide an answer.

The image depicted the young dogs all nestled together in a comparable environment at their breeder’s residence, sound asleep and sheltered by a similar type of structure. “I wonder if it makes him feel like he is closer to his brothers and sisters,” Lily reflected. “Can’t stop crying at him.”

Responding to the post about the Golden retriever, one TikTok user joked: “You better raise that cabinet so he can keep sleeping under there when he gets bigger.” Another observer noted: “Dogs like to be ‘under’ the same way cats like to be ‘up’ or ‘in’.”

Whilst a third revealed: “Our Sheepie likes to sleep in her ‘cubby’ under our bed even though she has to army crawl under it.”

Lily later told Newsweek: “We made the connection as my partner went and looked at the pics of the breeders that they sent us from when he was in his litter and made the connection.”

Now, however, Humphrey seems to have established a different pattern, much to Lily’s relief. “It has been 3.5-4 weeks since we have had him now, so I think he’s forgotten and now sleeps more in his bed,” she added.

But why do puppies like to sleep in enclosed spaces? Canine specialists Lords and Labradors suggest that puppies favour sleeping in confined areas due to innate instinct.

“Dogs are descendants of wolves, and their instinct to seek shelter is deeply ingrained in their DNA,” they explain online. “Just like wild canines seek out cosy dens to protect themselves from predators and harsh weather, your domesticated pooch instinctively looks for a safe, enclosed space to sleep under, providing them with a sense of security and protection.”

A further explanation involves temperature control, as Lords and Labradors highlight: “Open spaces underneath provide cooler spots during hot weather. Conversely, during colder seasons, the space under the bed can be warmer, creating a snug spot for your dog to curl up and stay comfortable.”

Additionally, certain dogs value the security and seclusion, appreciating their own territory and quiet time “away from the hustle and bustle of the household”.
