Keeping a dog happy requires surprisingly little. Beyond food and drink, their primary needs are simply room to roam, coupled with your affection and reassurance when required.

This simple truth moved one woman to tears after watching her pet‘s response to moving to a new house with her own garden after living in a flat.

In a TikTok clip, she revealed she’d previously lived in a compact flat, restricting her dog’s exercise to scheduled walks whilst toilet breaks were similarly limited to those outings.

Following their house move, however, the situation transformed entirely. The dog now spends her time basking in the sun and wandering freely within the security of her private garden.

The footage captures the dog sitting peacefully in the owner’s former apartment before transitioning to scenes of her joyfully bounding about and discovering the garden at their new home.

The caption reads: “Moving my dog from an apartment after three years. She’s so happy now.”

Responding to the video, one user said: “My dog is 8 and all she knows is an apartment. We walk her 3x a day but to be able to afford a house would be so awesome. I hope we can make her just as happy.”

Another user added: “Just moved our dogs into a house after 8 years in an apartment. They love the freedom.”

A third user said: “I want this so badly for my apartment dog. One day.”

One more user added: “I remember when we did this for the first time for our girl. Best feeling ever!” A final user said: “People should not adopt large dogs if they live in an apartment. I’m glad she is finally getting the outdoor space she needs and deserves.”

Keeping a dog in a flat

There are numerous things you need to consider before adopting a dog, regardless of where you live – but when it comes to keeping a dog in a compact space, there are even more factors to bear in mind.

A statement from the Dogs Trust reads: “Consider the size of the apartment and the amount of furniture you have against your dog’s need for space.

“All dogs are individuals, so it’s important to find the most suitable dog for you and your home.

“Consider their needs, such as medical care, grooming, training and behaviour, as well as their size, age, mobility and energy levels.

“Many dog behaviourists and trainers can also offer advice on what type of dog would best suit your lifestyle.”
