Dog behaviour and training specialist from Woodgreen Pets Charity, Lindsay Arliss, said science has actually proven that dogs feel love just like we do. And, just like humans, dogs express their affection in all sorts of unique and sometimes quirky ways.

Greeting you at the door, barking with excitement, or wagging their tails wildly are all classic signs of canine affection. “They may even whine to show how happy they are to see you,” Lindsay added, stating that pooches leaning against you, giving you a lick, or even stealing your clothes are other sweet signs your dog loves you. “Dogs experience the same flush of a hormone called oxytocin when shown affection – just like we do when we’re around someone we care about,” Lindsay explained.

In fact, MRI scans have shown dogs’ brains light up when they smell their owner, but how do you know if you’re your dog’s absolute favourite person?

“If they follow you from room to room, they probably adore you,” Lindsay said. “Some dogs even rest their heads on their favourite humans or bring them toys to play.”

Even the way they look at you can say it all – soft eye contact and slow blinking is their version of a loving gaze.

Now, when it comes to the most lovable dog breeds, Lindsay says while all dogs are individuals, some breeds are especially known for their affectionate ways.

At the top of the list is the ever-gentle Golden Retriever, famous for its loyalty and loving nature.

Pugs are also highly affectionate, often glued to their owners’ laps and never far behind.

Dachshunds form deep bonds and are incredibly devoted to their families, often shadowing their humans around the house.

And Greyhounds, while they may be fast runners, when it comes to love, they’re calm, cuddly, and great with families.

Then there’s the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a breed brimming with love, but they aren’t so keen on being left alone for too long.

Five of the most lovable dog breeds

  • Golden Retriever
  • Pugs
  • Dachshunds
  • Greyhounds
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

“Every dog is different, no matter the breed,” Lindsay said. “But if you’re looking for a pup that wears their heart on their paw, these breeds are a great place to start.”
