Fans of the original Lilo and Stitch film, released in 2002, are eagerly anticipating Disney’s upcoming live-action remake, scheduled for release in May. The trailer, unveiled on Wednesday (March 12), has generated a wave of enthusiasm among viewers.

On YouTube, fans have been praising the casting of Maia Kealoha as Lilo, as well as the nostalgic value the remake brings. One fan commented: “This is the first Disney live-action remake I’m actually excited for, Stitch and the other alien characters look great and it’s really nostalgic to see all the scenes recreated.”

Another fan expressed gratitude that the original voice actor of Stitch was retained, saying: “Glad that they kept the voice actor of Stitch like it would be criminal if someone else had played him. Everything being recreated in live action is actually pretty amazing to look at.”

The live-action Stitch design has also received praise, with one viewer stating: “I can already tell this is gonna be the best Disney live action remake… this live action Stitch design is just too adorable.”

The casting of Lilo has also been well-received, with fans noting that the actress not only resembles the character but also captures her spirit. One fan wrote: “The actress playing Lilo not only looks, but sounds like her too, that’s some good casting,” reports the Mirror.

One fan enthused: “I feel like the lilo and stitch story actually fits in live action.

“It’s like the same stitch from the animated movie jumped into our world. It actually feels authentic.”

The upcoming film’s synopsis tantalises audiences with: “A live-action reimagining of Disney’s 2002 animated classic, Lilo and Stitch is the wildly funny and touching story of a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family.”

Rising star Kealoha is set to charm as Lilo, alongside a stellar ensemble featuring Zach Galifianakis, Billy Magnussen, Sydney Agudong, and Kaipo Dudoit.

The beloved original animation, which hit screens in 2002, was a box office sensation, grossing $273.1 million against its $80 million budget.

The film garnered criticalacclaim for its distinctive narrative, comedic elements, warmth, and creativity and gained a huge following from fans.

Following the triumph of the initial release, the franchise expanded with several sequels, including direct-to-video titles such as Stitch! The Movie (2003), Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch (2005), and Leroy & Stitch (2006).

Lilo & Stitch will be released in cinemas on May 23, 2025
