Most passengers heading on a long-haul flight either pay extra to reserve their seats in advance or accept whatever they’re given.

But according to one traveller, some people take a different approach altogether – hoping another passenger will give up a better seat to accommodate them and their family.

That’s exactly what happened on one eight-hour international flight when a dad approached a fellow passenger with what initially sounded like a generous seat swap.

Sharing the story on Reddit, the traveller explained they were sitting in an aisle seat in economy on a fully booked flight when a couple boarded with their toddler, who was already crying before take-off.

The man’s wife and child took the seats next to them, while the dad remained standing in the aisle before asking if they would swap seats so he could sit with his family.

The passenger was hesitant, but asked where his seat was. To their surprise, the man revealed he was sitting in business class.

They said: “Of course, I said absolutely.” However, just as they rose to gather their possessions, the father abruptly altered his account.

“Wait, my wife actually wanted to go sit up there. Can you take her seat instead?” he asked.

Rather than relocating to business class, the passenger realised they were in fact being requested to trade their aisle seat for a middle seat alongside a screaming toddler.

“I said no. I’m not switching to the middle row and being blocked into a middle seat by a screaming toddler,” they recalled. “I thought you wanted to sit with your family?”

The father grew irate and accused the passenger of reneging on the arrangement, insisting it was unfair, as his wife had been anticipating enjoying his business-class seat instead.

The confrontation prevented other passengers from reaching their seats. The traveller confessed to asking the man whether he had “any extra of whatever drugs he was on”, which would have only escalated the tension.

But thankfully, before the dispute could intensify further, a flight attendant appeared to determine the cause of the delay.

The passenger alleged the man instantly informed the crew member they had consented to take his wife’s seat before declining to be cooperative.

Fortunately, another passenger seated nearby intervened to clarify what had actually occurred. And embarassingly, the argument ended up seriously backfiring on the “entitled” dad.

Following verification of the man’s boarding pass, the flight attendant requested the traveller to gather their belongings before personally accompanying them to the business class seat.

They added: “Needless to say I had a very nice flight after that.”

Responding to their post, one user said: “Definitely your proudest moment of being justified and taking his business class seat.”

Another user added: “Wow. Flight attendant gave you his business class seat that he paid for? Usually they just say ‘sit in the seat you were assigned’.”
