Couple find time capsule from 1997 in home left speechless
Moving into a new property naturally sparks curiosity about its past and the lives lived within its walls.
However, one couple received quite the surprise upon discovering a time capsule left by previous occupants, dated August 17, 1997.
The capsule revealed the names of the former residents along with their motivation for creating and concealing it within the house.
They wrote: “We decided to put this time capsule in when we tore apart he basement bathroom. I was hoping to find some secret hidden in the walls but I didn’t.
“So, we are hiding a secret in our walls now. The prior owner did a c****y job in the basement and we ended up tearing out everything and building a new bathroom.
“If you have torn out this wall, we hope that it wasn’t because of something we did wrong with our remodelling job. If so, we sincerely apologise for putting you through all this work.”
Further into the note, the woman detailed how she’d recently qualified as a paralegal whilst her husband was employed as a video game technician.
She continued by mentioning her husband had launched a venture crafting and selling Adirondack chairs, having recently established a “webpage to sell the chairs over the internet”.
The woman concluded: “That is probably ancient technology, depending on when you found this package.
“Our hobbies include gardening, scuba diving, white-water rafting, making out own beer, and travelling. Our families are scattered all over the country. We both come from relatively small families and have no children ourselves – just our cats.
“We have included some items in our time capsule that might be fun for you to find and that relate to our lives.
“I wish we could be around to see your reaction when you find this package. Of course, you might think this whole thing is really stupid. Oh well, have fun and maybe you will leave something for your future homeowners – if the house is still standing by then.”
Reflecting on their remarkable find, the current residents remarked: “I think we would’ve gotten along with the people who lived here then.
“I especially love their references to the internet. It must have felt so innovative and exciting creating a webpage then.
“Luckily they also included dated photos that helped us piece together when some of our renovations may have been done. So happy that our house has had some good vibes throughout its 95 year life.”
Following the post’s appearance on Reddit, fellow users encouraged them to locate the previous couple and inform them of the capsule’s discovery.
They responded: “I have not looked them up yet. I used the county auditor’s website to trace back every owner of the house since it was built in 1925 and I’m trying to work from oldest to most recent to try to piece together a history of the life of our home.
“So far still trying to find anything about its very first owner. It would probably be easier to work my way backwards but I wanted to learn the story chronologically if able.”
