In one week’s time, Sir Christopher Nolan’s latest IMAX blockbuster hits cinemas. The Oscar-winning legend has adapted Homer’s epic The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon as the Trojan warrior on his decade-long journey home.

Now Nolan has spoken out against The Odyssey’s online backlash, telling The Telegraph: “Comes with the territory. But look, these conversations that happen before people see the film – they’re always irrelevant. Because no one having them knows what the film actually is yet.”

Nevertheless, there is one creative choice Nolan believes could backfire for him.

Upon the release of the trailer, fans noticed that all the actors were speaking with American accents, even the British stars. Nolan told The LA Times, he wanted to find “language that has emotional, not intellectual meaning to people”

The Odyssey hits cinemas on July 17, 2026.
