Children’s soap issued safety alert over ‘flammable gas’ fear

A safety alert has been issued by the UK Government over a children’ s toiletry, after it could potentially risk burning when used. The alert was issued on Friday, February 27 by the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), explaining that it has suspended sales of a soap product over safety concerns while further investigations are carried out.

The Kids Stuff Crazy Foaming Soap is thought to contain flammable gases, which if used or dispensed near a flame, could result in burns to the user. The government’s risk description said: “The product contains butane, isobutane and propane, which are flammable gases. If the product is dispensed on to a flame or other ignition source, or comes into contact with a naked flame, the foam may ignite causing burns to the user.”

The Kids Stuff Crazy Foaming Soap comes in a 200ml bottle in a range of colours, including pink, blue and purple.

The products’ batch codes affected by the alert include:

• 26109E 3 (pink)
• 25947E 1 (pink)
• 26112E 5 (blue)
• 26112E 4 (blue)
• 25948E 3 (blue)
• 25651E (purple)

While sales of this product are suspended, the OPSS has urged people to check to see if they have purchased any of the affected items with the batch numbers listed above. Consumers who have the affected product should check the batch number and contact their retailer.

BBC’s Watchdog tested the foam in a lab and found that it “burned” for 15 seconds. Colin Sanders, a cosmetic scientist, raised concerns about the product’s flammable ingredients and urged it to be reformulated.

The brand told BBC Watchdog that “the product carries clear and prominent warnings, including that it is an extremely flammable aerosol, must not be used near naked flames or ignition sources, and should only be used under adult supervision. It went on to say that it has also introduced additional on-pack safety measures, including cap stickers, to further reinforce safe use”.

It said that it takes product safety “extremely seriously” and that “it is already progressing an updated formulation of Crazy Foaming Soap, which it expects to release later this year”.

BBC wrote: “Finally, Kids Stuff told us that bath time products should always be used in line with pack instructions and under adult supervision, and that children should never be left unattended in the bath or in environments where open flames or heated instruments are present.”
