Cheapest UK supermarket for summer shop named beating Lidl and Asda

Finance experts from Fast Loan UK analysed the UK’s biggest supermarkets to find out where shoppers can buy the cheapest BBQ and other summer essentials for a family of four this summer – and there’s a £22 difference between the cheapest and most expensive.

According to the study, Aldi is the most affordable, with a total cost of just £24.83. The supermarket has the cheapest beef burgers at £3.49, the cheapest burger gherkins at just 29p, and the cheapest potato salad at 99p. Asda comes second at £25.22, followed by Morrisons. Morrisons offers shoppers low prices on condiments, including the cheapest BBQ sauce (75p) and the cheapest coleslaw at just 50p.

There are a number of ways shoppers can keep costs down this summer, including buying own-brand products rather than branded alternatives and keeping an eye on multipack deals on buns and rolls.

Consumer Finance Expert at Fast Loan UK, Joe Brunt, said: “A summer barbecue is one of those occasions where costs can creep up quickly, particularly when you’re catering for a family. Our research shows that the gap between the cheapest and most expensive supermarkets for a BBQ spread is significant, with shoppers potentially paying over £22 more at M&S compared to Aldi for the same meal.

“What’s encouraging is that budget supermarkets like Aldi and Asda perform strongly across both meat and veggie options, so whether you’re firing up traditional burgers or going veggie, there are good value choices available without compromising on the spread.”
