Many motorists have only just discovered the purpose of the black dots on their car windscreens, which perform a vital function that most drivers are completely unaware of.
Regardless of how well you believe you know your vehicle, there are occasionally hidden features that may catch you off guard. From the function of various dashboard buttons to concealed design elements, you might be astonished by just how many serve a specific purpose — including the black dots that border the windscreen of every car on the road.
The topic recently sparked discussion on X (formerly known as Twitter), when a user named Rasmulan posted a photograph of a car windscreen with the black dots highlighted, before posing the question to the platform’s own AI chatbot.
“Hey @Grok, what is the purpose of these black dots on a car windshield??” they wrote in their post, while sharing a photo of the dots in question, which was seen framing the whole windscreen.
The X AI robot replied in its own post, where it went on to enlighten other car owners why all cars have these dots framing the windscreens, and why it’s important to keep an eye on them.

The X AI robot explained: “Those black dots (called frit or dot matrix) are on the edge of most car windshields for a few key reasons.”
It clarified that the dots conceal and shield the urethane adhesive and sealant bonding the glass to the car’s bodywork from harmful UV rays. They additionally provide a gradual visual shift from the solid black border to the clear glass, creating a neater appearance.
Furthermore, the AI explained that the dots assist in distributing heat uniformly during the manufacturing process, preventing any distortion of the glass.
According to The Windshield Company, the black dots on a car windscreen or car window are properly termed frits. Frits are fragments of black-painted enamel baked onto the glass edges during manufacturing.
Typically, they begin as a solid black strip at the glass perimeter before transitioning into smaller dots. The company elaborated on the significance of these dots, which aligns with Grok’s explanation on X.
Due to the dots’ crucial function, they advised motorists to monitor them carefully, ensuring they don’t deteriorate or fade. Should this occur, it’s vital to arrange replacement immediately.
Without them, your windscreen risks becoming dislodged, the experts warned on their website.
Users quickly flooded the comment section of the X post to express their reactions, with some admitting they were previously unaware of this information.
“Wow, I just learnt something,” one person commented.
However, someone else argued: “STILL UNNECESSARY ‘DESIGN’.”
